Meditation
In the float room your mind remains awake and dreamily alert, just above the threshold of sleep. Large areas of the brain are suddenly liberated from their normal workload of processing signals from the nervous system and sense organs. There is a sharp drop in the level of electrical activity of the brain (measured on an EEG) from the usual 20-25 Hz down to 4-8 Hz. EEG readings show a slow, rhythmic wave pattern known as the theta state. This is where your powers of visualisation and autosuggestion are greatly enhanced. Measurements of the brain waves produced by experienced zen meditators show large amounts of theta activity across the cortex. For most people, however for many the theta state is almost impossible to enter without falling asleep, floating increases theta brainwaves which are linked to vision and creativity, it aids in self-introspection and development and creates an ideal environment for meditation. Float tanks have been called “the gateway to the creative mind” Increases feelings of self-confidence, self-control and serenity.  Top tech entrepreneurs use isolation tanks as a source of innovation, they create hemispheric and whole brain integration.

They are an ideal environment to naturally shift your brainwave output from typical beta brainwaves (normal day-to-day operations dealing with the outside world) and gradually shift them toward achieving theta state (associated with a quieting of the body and busy thoughts while allowing the more interesting, creative, unrecognized parts of the brain to come to consciousness).  Achieving theta state is something that happens naturally while floating as the body and mind start to quiet, giving way to more profound modes of consciousness. One characteristic of theta state is what is called hypnagogic imagery. Hypnagogic imagery is that fleeting moment before you fall asleep when your mind’s eye visualizes vivid scenes and images. Theta brainwaves and the hypnagogic images therein have been closely likened to the zen mindset of yogis, master meditators, and individuals with elevated consciousness.
Theta is a highly elusive state, although we fleetingly pass through the theta state as we fall asleep at night and again as we wake up in the mornings, it is practically impossible to enter this state at will and remain in it without falling asleep. One of the unique features of floatation REST is that after 10 to 20 minutes of floating, theta becomes the predominant level of brain activity and remains so for the duration of the float session.

That’s just the beginning – there are infinite possibilities of consciousness within the float environment and within the theta state. The floater need not have initial knowledge of any method or technique to trigger the relaxation response for achieving these states; she/he only needs to lie back and relax into the water.
